History and Objectives:
It was founded in 1972 as University of Santander with the creation of the faculty of Medicine, the integration of various Colleges of Education and the taking over the two centres that depended on the University of Valladolid (The School of Civil Engineering and the Faculty of Science). In 1985 a new step was taken in the process of consolidation with the approval of the statutes and the change of the name of the University of Cantabria (UC)
The University of Cantabria is a young modern public institution whose main purpose is to contribute to social progress throughout a firm commitment to teaching and scientific excellence. It has about 13.000 students, both undergraduate and graduate and it offers a 34 degree programmes throughout its 12 faculties and schools and a wide range of graduate, Ph. D programmes and e- learning courses. Internationalization together with research are its most outstanding features. The balanced ratio of student´s numbers to teaching staff favours the quality of the teaching and the individual attention reinforced by advisory and support services that enables the students to acquires a well- rounded education.
The UC is located in Cantabria a northern Spanish region of half a million inhabitants on the shore of the Cantabrian Sea, crossed by a high mountain range. The region is endowed with mild temperatures all throughout the year and its natural mountain and coastal landscapes are perfectly combined with a rich artistic and cultural heritage. The capital, Santander is set around a natural port providing the city with one of the most beautiful bays in the country. The coastal side of the city enjoys a long strech of the top quality beaches and recreational areas.

The academic year begins in October and finishes in June. It is divided into two semesters (October- February and February- June). Classes run from October until June and exams and held in February and June. Re- sits are held in September.
